Maritime History, Travel and Small Boat Sailing      

      This page lists titles from our estate sale that include a range of material focusing on maritime history and travel, and related subjects. The emphasis is on small boat sailing and, in particular, first-hand accounts of ocean passages.
      Unless noted otherwise, all volumes are cloth bound (hard back), have dust jackets, and are standard 8vo size (octavo - 7" to 10" in length). All pertinent information is listed using standard IBCA terminology.

      Cook's narrative of the first Belgian expedition to the Antarctic under Adrien Gerlache de Gomery was the only first-person account of the expedition publ in English. Cook joined party as an anthropologist after failing to promote an American Antarctic expedition. Having sailed from the So Shetlands & discovered the strait that separated Palmer Archipelago from the Mainland, the Belgica was caught in the ice in the Bellingshausen Sea and thus unintentionally became the 1st expedition to winter in the Antarctic. Among the crew was the young Roald Amundsen, on his 1st polar expedition, during which he took part in the first Antarctic sledging journey.
